Sound Composition, Travis Giragosian

It’s been a lot of fun having the kids in my workshop this past week. My workshop is focused on sound composition and what gives a song texture, so we’ve been trying out various instruments and replicating the sounds that those instruments make using only our mouths. The kids have learned a lot about why certain instruments sound the way that they do, and why these instruments are important in a song- for example, we discussed how guitars are important in that they can produce rich chords while also establishing rhythm through strumming. I asked the kids to come up with describing words for the instruments’ sounds, rather than their physical qualities.
